These medieval walls served as a base for
the fortifications of the mid-XVIIth century, giving the city the actual
aspect of being a Fortress City par excellence. Originally, the wall had three main entrance
gates: Esqquina, Olivenca e Sao Vicente. In 1951, however, a viaduct was
built, which involved another opening in the wall.
Elvas has played a vital role in the history
of Portugal due to its strategic position and even before it became a city
Elvas saw the birth of its castle which dates back to the times of Roman
power.
Should you go up to see the castle you will
notice the Forte de Graca to the north. This fortress was built in 1763 and
was concluded in 1792, having been used throughout the centuries as well as a
military and political prison. With four bastions and the corresponding outer
walls, the Forte da Graca is considered a masterpiece of Military
Architecture.
Opposite the Forte da Graca, south of the
city, stands yet the other fortress - Forte de Santa Luiza. The construction
of this fort began in 1641 and it was occupied in 1648, though construction
work continued until 1687.
Elvas possesses a series of quite remarkable
churches in various styles of religious architecture, which are a reflection
of the extremely religious nature of the Portuguese people living in a zone
permanently in war in the past.
Also important are the Museum, with its
invaluable collection dispersed throughout its various sections, and the
library, one of the most important of the country.
Concerned with the recuperation, preservation
and appreciation of the existing patrimony, it is the intention of the
community and of the City Council to nominate Elvas as a World Heritage Site.
