During the l6th/17th and 18th centuries the
Vesting was occupied at various times by the armies of Phillip II of Spain
(1572), Louis XIV of France (1672) and briefly by the Prussians in 1787
followed by the armies of the French Revolution. The Vesting was finally
liberated following heavy bombardment by Volunteers under General Krayerhoff
in 1814.
Today Naarden is a thriving community with
17,000 inhabitants of which some 1,300 live within the Vesting. The town
centre is full of attractive small shops together with a wide variety of cafés
and restaurants.
There is an active business community based
upon a modern commercial centre producing chemicals, furniture and computer
products.
Tourism is now a principle industry of the
Town. Visitors from all parts of the world are drawn to The Nederlands
Vestingrnuseum which is situated in the network of underground casements,
passageways, magazines and billets of the defences. Another principal
attraction is the memorial museum to the 17th Century Czech theologian and
philospher Comenius who lived in exile in the vicinity. Visitors should also
see The Grote Kerk, The Groot Arsenal, The Spanish House, the Orphange
Barracks and other fine buildings within the Vesting.
Naarden has a modern harbour with moorings
for 1,250 boats and facilities for water sports etc.
