Thanks
to careful restoration the parapet walk can be reached from Porta Padova to
Porta Bassano gates and in the near future you will be able to go around the
whole wall.
The parapet walk is around 12m higher than the surrounding land.
On average the walls, built without foundations, are 2.1m thick and
rest on ramparts made with earth removed from the fosses below.
Once
leaving the parapet walk at Porta Padova gate; you walk through the Torre di
Malta and the Archaeological Museum, built by Ezzelino III da Romano in 1251
as a gruesome prison for his enemies, named also by Dante in the verses of the
Divina Commedia. Cittadella
followed the emblematic and brutal rise and fall of Ezzelino III da Romano, a
despotic feudal lord who ruled for many years over the whole of Central Veneto.
In the fourteenth century Cittadella returned under the sway of the
Carraresi. It went through a
series of vicissitudes such as the siege by Cangrande della Scala, two
important visits by King Louis I of Hungary (1374) and Emperor Charles Viii
(1354). Gian Galeazzo Visconti,
the first Duke of Lombardy, occupied the town in 1389.
Today
Cittadella offers a lot to visit such as the Town Hall, named in
documents since the fifteenth century as Palazzo della Loggia and restored on
neo-classical lines in 1816; Palazzo
Pretorio (Magistrate’s Hall). Recently
restored, representing the power of the Paduan State first and later the
Venetian Republic. Inside you can
admire frescoes dating from 1500; Town
Theatre (Teatro Sociale) simple neo-classical facade building opened
in 1828 handed over to the Council in 1950, fully resumed its activities,
acting year after year as an irreplaceable symbol of Cittadella’s culture;
Duomo
(Cathedral) The Duomo is certainly an architectural complex of great
interest built between 1774 and 1826. The
façade was completed in 1913. Inside
many works of art can be seen such as the six altars, four of which bear works
by Leandro Bassano, Lattanzio Quarena, Sebastian Santi and Michele Fanoli from
Cittadella. Of note the paintings
in the sacristy of Jacopo da Ponte, some time ago on the high alter of the
parish church a painting of Lazzaro Bastiani (1430 –1512) and Palma il
Giovani (1540-1628).
