The history of the Roman Pécs dates back to the 2nd century A. D.
, when a rural settlement with a favourable location and a pleasant climate
emerged at the southern foothills of the Mecsek Mountains, at the crossroads
of the north-south trade routes. Here through the ages a variety of cultures
and peoples thrived, each inheriting from the other, leaving an urban
civilizational heritage of remarkable value for the modern age.The
town, indeed, is a wonderful mixture of the past and the present. The Early
Christian cemetry dating from Roman period, the medieval townwalls, the
relics of Turkish architecture - the mosques, the minaret and the bath -
built during the Ottoman occupation of Hungary, the four-towered Cathedral,
attract a great number of visitors from all over the world.
The World Heritage Committee of the UNESCO included the Early Christian
cemetery of our town, the former Roman city of Sopianae, to the World
Heritage List in Australia in 2000, thus ranking it with sites representing
universal historic values and with cultural assets of outstanding importance
from the point of view of the history of humanity.
