CZECH
REPUBLIC |
Policka
The royal dowry town of Policka lies in the picturesque Czechomoravian
highlands on the border between Bohemia and Moravia. It is a city rich in
history, with a number of well-preserved historical monuments and a great
cultural tradition.
|
Policka was founded by King Otakar Premysl II in 1265. In the 14th
century massive stone walls were built around the city, fortified by 19
bastions. These city walls encircle the old town, and are among the
best-preserved in Central Europe. Their length is 1,220 meters, and the main
wall is 10 meters high. The main ramparts to this day have retained sections
of battlements and galleries. Other monuments include the baroque town hall
with its angular gothic tower (the City Gallery is based in the town hall, the
baroque plague pillar and the statues on the city fountains.
Another valuable piece of architecture is the gothic/renaissance cemetery
chapel of St. Michael, with its original ornamentation. Also of value is the
collection of over 80 carved traditional gates, which in terms of their
refinement and diversity have no equal in the Czech republic. Nearly half of
these can be seen on a romantic tour of the city.
The tower of St. Jacob's Church was the birthplace in 1890 of renowned
composer Bohuslav Martinú. You can visit the room where he was born on the
top floor of the tower, 36 meters above the town. Numerous memorabilia of
Martinú's life and work are on display in the City Museum.
In your free time you can use the tennis courts, new bowling bar, minigolf, outdoor swimming
complex, indoor pool, sports hall and climbing wall, visit the cinema and take
a stroll through the city park.
