Its enchanting scenery and the warmth of its inhabitants make Zadar a
favourite with everyone, and many travellers compare it to Venice and Dubrovnik.
It carries the legacy of a rich spiritual and material culture dating back to
classical, mediaeval and renaissance times, and has been a fountain-head of
Croatia's history.
The oldest section of Zadar is centred around the Roman Forum on a peninsula
within the city walls, and there are many historical gems here. These include
archives, libraries and art galleries, making the city centre into a treasure
house of our historical, literary and musical heritage.
Zadar is the oldest Croatian university town (the university was founded in
1396), and the present College of Humanities with its 19 departments carries on
this tradition; it was also the birthplace of the first Croatian novel and the
first newspaper in our language. Among many other cultural institutions Zadar
hosts a permanent exhibition of ecclesiastical art, and Nin. The musical
evenings at St. Donat's Church, an open air theatre, a puppet theatre and many
other festivals and events contribute to the town's lively atmosphere,
especially during the summer period.
The town is the focus of various special tourist programmes, including
nautical tourism, conventions, sport, health and recreational tourism, and there
are several well-organised marinas.
Numerous small and intimate catering establishments, beautiful beaches and
promenades, excursions to interesting and original locations as well as many
other attractions ensure that our guests are enjoyably entertained. This is
Zadar - VERITAS JADERTINA!
