Archway
The
workshops are completed with the last workshop being held in Lucca in March
this year. There are 3 comprehensive GPG produced and two guides are in
development. These GPG’s will be presented at the legacy conference in
Chester.
The conference is 25 & 26 June 2007. Invites to all WTFC members will go
out at the end of April or early May. Archway hopes that many WTFC members
will attend the legacy conference.
The
executive members would like to express their appreciation to everybody who
has worked hard on implementing Archway and the production of the GPG’s.
6.
Involvement of Schools - Education
Three
people involved with the educational project, Milica Maslo, Piran, Luigi
Rossetto, Soave and John Sciberras, Malta. Five different schools worked on
an educational project and this resulted into publishing a book: “The young
in the shelter of Town Walls”.
Thanks to
everyone involved with the production of this book. Project was beneficial
and we learned from it. It would good to try to continue with these kinds
of projects. We need to think how to involve children in the walled towns
and how we can do that in the future.
Cities
have indicated there interest, but somebody needs to take the lead, we need
to look at funding and what kind of means we want to develop the next
project with children and youth.
Mrs Linda
Thorp can take this back to the North West Link group. Cllr John Price can
ask Milica Maslo if she would like to be the coordinator/communicator for
the future initiatives.
7.
Symposium
2008 –
Canterbury
– William Petit
Mr
William Pettit gave an overview of the Canterbury Symposium in 2008 (see
encl). WTFC will try to keep the registration fees similar but this depends
on finding enough sponsorship. The date for the symposium has been agreed.
The symposium will take place Friday 10 Oct till Tuesday 14 Oct 2008
8.
Financial
update from Treasurer
Financial
year has been approved by the auditors. We have now more than 100 paying
members, this includes associate members. WTFC is becoming more self
sufficient. The healthy balance needs to be read with caution because WTFC
still needs to contribute to the Archway project. It is important to try to
keep a healthy balance by seeking further sponsorship. For example the
newsletter could be sponsored.
Members
could help by speaking to non-paying members and try to re-connect them with
the WTFC. Furthermore, to let the WTFC secretariat knows if there are any
mistakes on the contact list and persons responsible for payment.
Secretariat can look at how we can keep reminding members of payment.
Thanks to
the treasurer Mr
Medwyn
Jones
and Mrs Janet Bourhill for all their hard work.
Sponsorship Update:
WTFC is
negotiating with a sponsor, Bellways, a British Developer, to get them a
corporate sponsor. However, it is appreciated if other cities can ask for
sponsorship for any WTFC activities and products.
9.
Election
of Vice -President
We had
one nomination for Vice-President, Mr Luigi Rossetto from Soave. Since he
was not opposed his nomination has been accepted. Due to Mr Luigi Rossetto’s
vice-presidency there will be a vacant place on the executive board.
Executive will look at to fill this position.
10.
World
Walled Town of the Year Award – Nominations
At the
AGM we will invite nominations for this award. Cities that are nominated
will receive an information pack. This pack includes the criteria, type of
nomination, deadlines etc. At the next executive meeting in Ohrid, the long
list of nominations will be announced. The nominations will be judged by a
panel. The panel exist of Cllr John Price, Mr Peter van Roosmalen and Mr
Brian Smith from the EHTF. The winner of the award will be announced at the
next symposium in 2008.

Circle of Walled towns, towns in
Portugal
and Spain was established in November 2006. It would be good if those
cities would become individual membership.
16.
Future
Symposia – Location - Canterbury 2008
Malta 2009
Xian 2010
Pécs
2011
We are
not sure if Malta is able to host the Symposium, we need to look at other
possibilities if it is necessary. Due to logistical difficulties and
financial issues, the Symposium in Xian is most likely not possible.
Furthermore, Pécs is also struggling to commit to hosting the symposium.
Therefore, it is necessary to look at alternatives and if cities are
interested in hosting in symposium they need to let us know.
17.
Future
Executive Meetings - Ohrid 2007
Carrickfergus 2008
WTFC has
not received confirmation if Ohrid is able to host this meeting. At the
moment this is left open and it could change.
Carrickfergus proposed to have the meeting in June 2008. Since this is too
close to the symposium it would be better to have the meeting in April
2008. Carrickfergus propose to have a European Walled Town Day and organise
activities in all Walled Towns. This also could link in with open Heritage
Days. For example the Irish Walled Towns Network, produced a brochure
related to a local photo competition in 2005. This was done with the
excellent support from Mrs Alison Harvey from the Irish Heritage Council.
This is an initiative the WTFC can look into
18.
Future
Direction of the Circle
(1)
Introduction by President
At
previous meetings it was agreed to look at establishing a technical network
and also there was a suggestion by Mrs Maud Arkestijn, to establish a WTFC
University.
(2)
Establishment of Technical Network
The
proposal is to have a technical and academic network as part of the WTFC
(see encl). This network will meet for the first time during the Archway
Legacy Conference in Chester.
(3)
WTFC
University
The
suggestion of establishing a WTFC University was proposed by Mrs Maud
Arkestijn. During the last Executive meeting in
Verona
it was agreed that the technical arm (technical and academic network) would
look into this initiative. This will be taking up during the first meeting
in
Chester
