Welcome

The Walled Towns Friendship Circle (WTFC) is the international association for the sustainable development of walled towns, walled cities and fortified historic towns. This set of pages provides detailed information, including pictures, of some of these towns, while basic information on many others is to be found on our Research Pages, which are maintained by David Bruce at UWE, Bristol, which has further general information about walled towns and some further development pages.

 

Membership of the WTFC currently includes 152 historic walled towns, walled cities and fortified towns in Europe and beyond.  To learn more about the WTFC you can read our constitution here.

WTFC was founded in 1989 in Tenby (South Wales) by Peter Osborne, now Honorary Life President. Grants towards the establishment and projects of the WTFC have been made by the European Commission DGXXIII (tourism Unit) in 1990 and 1993.

Member towns that have hosted the annual symposium are Cittadella (Italy), Loches (France) Drosendorf an Der Thaya(Austria) ,Londonderry / Derry (N. Ireland), Mdina (Malta), Chester (England).
Piran (Slovenia), Zadar, (Croatia), Tenby (Wales), Elvas (Portugal). Soave (Italy). Waterford (Ireland). The 2004 Symposium was held in
Chichester (England), from 11 - 16 September.  In 2005 it was held in 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands from 31 May to 5 June. Verona, Italy 2006, (Archway). Plasencia Spain, 16 -21 April 2007.
