" WALLED TOWNS FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE MOBILISES FOR ACTION TO PERSUADE E.U. TO CONTINUE PROVIDING CULTURAL FUNDING" The Circle, through member town 's-Hertogenbosch, recently contacted the European Commissioner for Culture and Education , Jan Figel, to ask for his help. The Circle urged Mr Figel to support the maintainance of adequate funding, for sustaining cultural heritage, particularly walled towns in Europe, during finalisation of the European Structural Funds programme for 2007-2013. 's-Hertogenbosch, on behalf of the Circle, produced a position paper for Mr Figel which drew fucus to the needs of historic fortifications in the proposed new structure funds programme. The paper emphasised the need for awareness of the great cultural, social and economic assets of European walled towns. It identified the wide range of experts and professionals situated in these walled towns ,who were eager to collaborate in European projects ,such as the Circle's present Interreg 3C "Archway" project, to meet shared challenges and exchange knowledge and experience. Mr Figel was urged to consider that together these people have a broader view, an elaborate variety of insights and experience and that in collaborating they can deal with complex problems and make decisions to ensure the future of our cultural heritage, cultural identity and dynamism of our walled towns. He was requested to give very serious attention to the need to support the interests of walled towns within the new European Structure Funds Programme for 2007-2013, to allow us to preserve these "Timestones of History" as the Circle's Piran Declaration describes our walled towns, so that they may be "treasured,maintained and safeguarded from neglect and destruction and passed on to perpetuity" for future generations to enjoy. The Circle now awaits the results of these approches, with the hope that Mr Figel can exercise some influence on our behalf. |
