Interreg IIICArchway European Funding

What is 'ARCHWAY'

The 'ARCHWAY' project is an E.U. Interreg 3C West ,funded scheme. The project is being led by Chester City Council on behalf of the Walled Towns Friendship Circle;
Under the “ARCHWAY” scheme, five main partner towns will each host workshops designed to produce a good practice guide on a subject critical to the successful management of historic walled towns. These will ultimately be shared with all 147 Circle members. The University of the West of England is the Circle’s academic advisory partner and joins the project as academic and editorial advisors. The Circle has, until now, remained under-funded and relatively low-key, except for its fourteen annual symposia, which have been held in nine different countries of Europe.

Under its present President, John Price, a leading Councillor in Chester, UK, the Circle has been able to create a rolling business plan. But a significant funding catalyst was required to allow the professional network to develop as a valued source of good practice guidance and shared experience. INTERREG III C is providing these funds.

The ‘ARCHWAY’ programme consists of two workshops being held in each themed partner city, resulting in each city producing a best practice guide, as follows;

2005

· 's-Hertogenbosch (Netherlands) (21-23 April) - '”Conservation'- Protection and Enhancement”
· Valletta, (Malta). (June)  - “Transport both in and to walled towns”,

2005/6

· Arabarri (a consortium of small towns in the Basque country of Spain)  - “Spatial development issues”,

2006

· Piran, (Slovenia) - “Tourism”

2006/7

· Lucca , Italy  - “Management of Cultural Heritage”

2007

· Chester, UK - Legacy Conference (bringing together the output of the workshops)

There will be an overarching theme of access to the historic built environment for the socially and/or physically disadvantaged.

Verona (Italy), Pecs (Hungary) and Lörrach (Germany)

These supporting partners, will each provide experts to attend each themed “ARCHWAY” workshop to reinforce the capacity of the outcomes to be sustainable and widely applicable to historic and site-restricted towns across Europe and beyond
