Mohács: Mohács: Busho Marching
(19-24. February 2004)
During
shrovetide the bushos of Mohács, dressed in their long-wool furs, their faces
hidden behind carved willow masks, painted with flaming colours, try to convert
the town into a merry-go-round that is both fearful and cheerful. The farewell
from winter, welcome of spring celebration is closed on Shrove Tuesday by a

Bóly: Emmaus
(12. April 2004)
Bóly
(South Baranya), located between Mohács and Pécs, is inhabited by German
minorities. Among German folkways the so-called Emmaus celebration has been
preserved. On Easter Monday people gather in the row of cellars encircling the
village. In the streets carrying "Swabish" (German) names the majority
of some 400 cellars are operated as presshouses and guesthouses as well. This
time local cellarmen open the doors and welcome guests and visitors with local
wine. For this feast a large number of people of Bóly origin arrive from
Germany and together with those that were translocated. Dance and brass

Kaposdada, Kassai Valley: International Archer
Competition
(15. Mai und 18. September 2004)
In
the nearby valley at Kaposmérő, to the West of Kaposvár one can
participate in a journey in time: one can get acquainted with battle processes
of Hungarians in the 9th century. Both during the competitions held twice a year
(3rd Saturday of May and September each year), and on the first Saturday of each
month (open day) one can attend a lecture held in a 160-year-old yurta about
everyday life, culture and handicraft of Magyars in the time of the Settlement

Kaposvár: City of Painters
(21-23. May 2004)
The
last weekend of May is the birthday anniversary of József Rippl-Rónai, the
famous painter of Kaposvár. Clowns, artists, wooden legged colour-bearers,
street painters and portrait painters call back the atmosphere of the turn of
the century, one can attend open air concerts, puppet shows or dance at street

Pécs: 4th National Theatre Meeting
(3-12. June 2004)
For
more than 20 years the most important meeting of the Hungarian Theatre Society
has been the National Theatre Meeting. It is the third time Pécs will host this
event in 2003. The previous two years have definitely confirmed expectations for
Pécs. Beside high-level theatre performances the additional events and programs

Pécs: Weeks of Arts and Gastronomy (12-24. June 2004)
Musical,
theatre, film and literary events are arranged in open air and in restaurants
together with special gastronomic experiences, folk art markets, folklor
programs. In the street of Fine Bites and Fine Wines the best wines from
producers of the Villány-Siklós Wine Route and from the Pécs-Mecsekalja Wine
Area can be tasted with food specialities from Hungary, Greece, Croatia, Mexico

Szekszárd: 30th FIAT Gemenc Trophy Bicycle Race
(30. June-3. July 2004)
The
Gemenc Trophy, since 1975 has become important part of the bicycle racing
calendar. No doubt, the race is a tourist attraction and also a good opportunity
to get acquainted with the historic, cultural and folk-art heritage of Tolna

Nagyszakácsi: Royal Chef Competition
(5-7. August 2004)
Nagyszakácsi
is a settlement from the Medieval Age. (Kings of Hungary used to donate land to
their excellent chefs. Hence the name of the village: King Chef that was changed
to Big Chef later.) The local Heritage Society organized the first "Royal
Chef Competition" in 1993, to remember those who provided good food and
drink to the table of kings. Best chefs of Hungary gather every year to compete
for the title of "Royal Chef of the Year". The biggest attraction of
the event is the chef's competition with very strict rules and conditions: all
meals should only be prepared in oven using raw materials, spices and medieval
cooking techniques known in the 14th and 15th century. Beside Medieval flavours
various events envision the Rennaisance culture of Hungary. Medieval music,
dance, buskers, horse riders and champions entertain the public. Info:

Pécs and Baranya County: World Folkloriada - The CIOFF World Festival - The
Folklore Olympics
(12-24. August 2004)
This
is the quadrennial event of the International Council of Folklore Festivals (CIOFF
- Conseil International des Organisations de Festivals de Folklore et d' Arts
Traditionnels), which enjoys membership from 88 member countries. Its function
is to preserve and disseminate the values of traditional cultures, and to
nurture the living spiritual tradition. The 2004 World Folkloriada's main
organiser is the Hungarian branch of the CIOFF, the Association of Hungarian
Folklore Festivals. The Pécs events are being arranged under the auspices of

Pécs: Pécs Days
(16-26. September 2004)
Aligning
to the Day of the City and to traditions of a primary city of students, events
are organized with domestic and international ensembles. Ethnic minorities
living within the region, brass ensembles have their own gala performances, plus
exhibitions in several galleries, folk art market, gastronomic specialties,
tasting the best wine and food of the region. This is the time of the

Villány-Siklós Wine Route, Pécs: World Drinking Song Festival
(23-26. September 2004)
Concerts
of drinking songs performed by vocal ensembles from various European countries
are arranged at several settlements of the Villány-Siklós Wine Route and in
the county capital Pécs. One can attend wine tasting ceremonies and get
acquainted with traditions of wine making. The series of events is closed by a
colossal vintage pageant on the main square at Pécs where all the choirs attend

Szekszárd: Vintage festival

The
biggest event of the Szekszard wine making area is arranged on last weekend of
September each year. Beside presenting vintage traditions several folklore

Magyarlukafa: 20th Vendel-Day pilgrimage
(24. October 2004)
This
little village in the Zselic Hills is the centre of handicraft arts. "Kaptár"
(Beehive) Society, the league for handicraft masters of the area regularly holds
programs, activity camps and present-making events before holidays both for
adults and children. The biggest annual event is the Vendel-Day pilgrimage with

Pécs: Luca-Day witchcraft
(11-13. December 2004)
Events
include the presentation of best wines of Baranya and the region, contest of new
wine, the art of wine tasting, drinking songs, and a meeting of wine makers.
This is the renewal of folk traditions related to Luca-day and Advent, wine and
